New Zealand Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal
New Zealand Skeptics

About us

The New Zealand Skeptics form a network of New Zealanders including magicians, teachers, scientists, health professionals and many others from all walks of life. Members have a variety of religious faiths, economic beliefs and political leanings, but are all interested in examining what objective scientific support there is for claims of such things as psychic abilities, alternative health practices, creationism and other areas where science, pseudo-science and shonky science interact.

There are always more questions!

  • Is that a star or a UFO?
Which do you think is more likely?
  • Is the Earth only 6,000 years old?
Why do some people believe this?
  • Does homeopathy work?
What is the evidence that it does?

If extraordinary claims are being made, you should demand extraordinary proof, especially if you are putting your money or your life on the line.

Many of the practices questioned by the Skeptics take advantage of people at their most vulnerable - cancer patients seeking alternative cures, grief-stricken bereaved seeking contact with the dead. They prey upon our trust, our hopes and our fears, and exploit our lack of specialist knowledge.

Where the potential for harm exists - whether physical, mental, emotional or economic - Skeptics consider it unethical not to challenge such claims.

Skeptics - looking for the best place between "suckered" gullibility and close-minded cynicism
